it’s always you and me. it’s always been.
i am the cage, golden and gleaming and guilty.
you are the bird, intoxicated with song.

your hand in mine and a liquid high all we hear
till the ends of the universe. your smile has a
teenage elation we’ll know just once in our life.
the 2/2 rhythm has us in a chokehold – two by
two, just like me and you. our abandon is reckless
and i feel faint knowing you could drop me
just as quickly. for you? i drink it in like poison.

it’s always you. and me, now, too.
i am the cage, golden and gilded and good
enough. you are the bird, finally free.

you tiptoe to twirl my taller frame around, and for
once i feel like the prettiest girl at the party. your
laughter is as silky as the saxophone’s croon – the
laughter that gets us into trouble at all the wrong
times. for you? i have all the time in the world.

(p.s. i hope i can use ‘yours sincerely’ instead of
‘yours faithfully’ from now on?)
